A brief history of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Descending from Japan and later refined by the Gracie family in Rio De Janeiro, Brazilian.  Jiu-Jitsu, also known as  'THE GENTLE ART'  or Arte Suave in Brazilian Portuguese, is a combative system that utilizes physics, leverage and angles to help small (sometimes weaker) combatants overcome larger and stronger opponents.  Joint locks, chokes, take downs and throws are all utilized to achieve victory. No punching or kicking. Only ground work. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is truly the physics of the fight game.

A typical class...

A typical class consists of a 8-10 warm up period which can include running, tumbling and mild plyometric exercises.  After that our Professor will share a technique with the whole class and break it down to fine details so that you may better understand.  Next you will be invited to practice the technique with a partner as the Professor walks around and personally assists you with any details you may have missed.  After this the class will be invited to "roll" - this is the Jiu Jitsu way of saying partners will be invited to 'spar' or 'wrestle' some may even say 'fight' with classmates in a very safe and controlled manner.  Our professor will individually pair students with similar sized and skilled opponents.
