1. GENERAL
Q. Is Brazilian jiu jitsu the same thing as 'cage fighting' or the UFC?
A. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is NOT 'Cage Fighting' we do not kick or punch...EVER! 'Cage Fighting' or MMA is a hybrid sport that features some techniques taught in BJJ. Not the other way around.
Q. Ok then. Is it safe?
A. Like any sport Brazilian Jiu Jitsu does have opportunities for participants to be injured. One crucial factor DOES make a significant difference and is very unique to our sport. The 'TAP'. In BJJ participants signify discomfort or the unwillingness to continue by physically 'TAPPING' on the mat or their training partner. The 'TAP' is our most sacred rule and must always be honored. Participants who fail to comply with this standard may be dismissed from the Academy and could forfeit any chance of a refund IF the situation merits such a penalty. Also keep in mind there is no striking so head trauma, such as in boxing, is practically eliminated. Honor and respect for our training partners is paramount at this Academy!
Q. How long are the classes?
A. FUNDAMENTAL classes are 60 min long. INTERMEDIATE classes are 90 min long. All other classes (DRILLS and OPEN MAT) are 60min long .
Q. is there an age limit on who can train?
A. Yes. You must be at least 5 years of age to train here at Team Junqueira. Children's classes range from 5-11 years old. 12 years old and up participate in ADULT classes.
Q. Do I have to be in shape to participate in Brazilian jiu jitsu classes?
A. NO! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a terrific way to GET IN SHAPE. All fitness levels are accepted. Although we do have a 'Old enough to train' limit for younger participants we DO NOT have an age limit on the upper end. Masters and Seniors alike can all train BJJ along side the younger students. It very common to see father son/daughter partners or mother daughter/son partners. Families are encouraged!
Q. FINAL QUESTION. do I have to have previous wrestling, judo or martial arts experience?
A. ABSOLUTELY NOT! At Team Junqueira we believe that everyone has the ability to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY
2. ETIQUETTE
Q. OK, I am ready to start! What do I need to know about etiquette?
A. Team Junqueira is a traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training facility and etiquette is an important part of the training experience. We wear BJJ Gi's AKA Kimonos and belts. We award rank and stratify the class by experience level. We bow to each other and the instructor and we ALWAYS show honor and respect to our fellow students.
Q. Do I call my instructor Master or Sensei or anything like that?
A. No. Our Black Belts prefer that you call them Professor or formally refer to them as 'Your Instructor/s' or 'Professor' when discussing them with others or introducing them to your friends or family.
Q. What about shoes?
A. Great question. We do not train with shoes, sock or wrestling shoes. We do, however, suggest you invest in a decent pair of flip-flops or slip on sandals. You can use them every time you step off the mats. ESPECIALLY when visit the locker room or use the bathroom. In fact it's a requirement!
Q. Can I train shirtless or is it acceptable to be shirtless before, during or after class?
A. NO! We require that you wear a rash guard and or sports bra underneath you Gi. Also it is preferred you do not remove your kimono top in view of the general public. We have provide MEN'S/WOMEN'S locker room area and bathroom facility for this purpose.
Q. Is profanity or yelling tolerated? I tend to get a little vocal during athletic competition/training.
A. NO. NEVER. PERIOD. As martial artists we always strive to show discipline and control... never mind the fact that children are present. The presence of children is indeed a great indicator of the type of behavior and language we expect of you ON AND OFF THE MAT. Show respect and discipline at all times. respect the facility, your instructor and the other students/clients.
3. UNIFORMS
Q. What do I wear to class? Is there a uniform?
A. All participants are required to wear a traditional BJJ uniform that is either WHITE, BLUE, or BLACK and a rash guard and or sports bra underneath your Gi top. Also your uniform must be void of any or all other Academy patches or logos. Manufacture logos are acceptable.
Q. Will my old Karate/TaeKwonDo/Hapkido uniform work?
A. Unfortunately uniforms from other martial arts would not be acceptable for use in BJJ including SOME Judo uniforms (Sleeves may not be regulation length or cuff diameter.
Q. Where can I buy a uniform? Would I need it before my first class?
A. We offer uniforms for sale here at the Academy and at a fairly reasonable rate. In fact you may find our price very hard to beat, That being said you may still purchase your uniform from an outside source. Just keep the color choice in mind (see above)... SORRY, no PINK, ORANGE, YELLOW, RED, PURPLE or CAMO. Keep it traditional. As for your first class do we have some uniforms here for you to DEMO. After that you would want to order your uniform as soon as possible. We are willing to assist you in your choice if you do not opt for our Academy Gi.
